SPECIALTY AREAS

General

AEI has developed specialist capabilities in the following areas:

  • odour control
  • insurance investigations
  • biomedical waste
  • process equip. & piping, instrumentation
  • electric power & control
  • freeze protection systems
  • small community water & sewage

    Odour Control

AEI staff has been involved in a wide range of odour control projects, including high-rate ventilation and scrubbing systems for industrial as well as sewage treatment plants & refuse transfer stations.

         Representative Projects:

    a) Metro Toronto Commissioners St. Transfer Station

AEI carried out the pre-design and detailed design of a leading-edge odour control system for this transfer station located in the South-Riverdale area of Toronto - a neighbourhood which is very sensitive to air emissions. A study reviewed air dispersion from an existing tall stack, control of wind-induced fugitive emissions by ‘fast-rubber’ truck doors on entry and exit points; and the future use of either wet ‘packed bed’ or dry ‘granular-carbon’ scrubbers - if required. The engineering responsibility included the structural design by W.M. Slater Assoc. of a long-span pipe bridge between station and tall stack for high level discharge of the potentially odourous ventilation air. The ventilation air was drawn from the Tipping Floor source through large exhaust fans and across a long-span 6’ diameter pipe bridge to the high stack outlet. An odour dispersion analysis was performed to ensure that the stack exhaust was acceptable, using the MOEE computer model, and this was confirmed afterwards with a smoke bomb test of the ventilation system.

    b) Harbour Remediation & Transfer Biosolids Processing Plant

AEI was involved in the design of an odour control system for this plant, also on Commissioners St., which received digested sludge-cake from the Main TP and processed it using lime stabilization before transferring the product to remote mine tailings sites. Phase 1 of the odour control involved high rate ventilation as well as wet scrubbing of process fumes, together with ‘neutralizer’ injection into the exhaust stream from the Storage Building where the lime-stabilized product was stored awaiting removal. Phase 2 will involve a 3-stage acid and caustic/hypochlorite scrubber for the Storage Building, or an alternative odour control system. The design included an air dispersion analysis as well as support for development of a pilot scrubber.

    Insurance Investigations

AEI has been involved in a wide range of investigations, from fire inspections to participating as an expert witness, as well as review of questionable engineering practice on various types of projects.

    Biomedical Waste

AEI staff has participated extensively in the biomedical waste field including incineration feasibility studies, engineering designs, and assessments.

         Representative Projects:

  • Incinerator plant design for Sault St. Marie and Owen Sound hospitals.
  • Feasibility studies for numerous hospitals in the greater Toronto area.
  • Coordinating consultant for ‘Hospital Consultant of Metro Toronto’ on a broad study involving public & private sector groups.
  • Study on an advanced maceration/disinfection system at the Toronto Hospital laundry facility.

    Process Equip. & Piping, Instrumentation

AEI has the capability for the design of complex process systems, including the related equipment & piping, instrumentation & controls, and has done so for a broad range of projects.

    Electric Power & Control

AEI staff has strong experience in the electrical engineering design field, ranging from power & control of equipment, to utility interfacing for power plants.

         Representative Projects:

  • National Research Council, Ottawa gas-turbine cogen plant, 4.2 MW
  • Toronto Beare Rd. LFG power plant, 5.6 MW (recip. engines)
  • Energy Plus 2000 / Ajax Energy steam turbine cogen plant, 650 kW
  • Trigen London electrical interconnection for cogen plant

    Freeze Protection Systems

AEI staff has broad capability in this field, for buried and exposed tanks, piping & equipment including hot glycol & electric tracing systems. For example, the firm was involved in a freeze protection system for water storage tanks for the MOE.

    Small Community Water & Sewage

AEI staff has had extensive experience in this area, and some representative projects are:

  • small community cluster pumping stations for Toronto Islands
  • small community shallow water & sewer systems for Rose Blanche, Nfld.; Temagami, Ont.; and Toronto Islands
